INDIAN RIVER COUNTY — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a freight train Sunday morning at a railroad crossing in Vero Beach, authorities said.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office was notified of the crash at 7:20 a.m. in the area of the 77th Street railroad crossing, just west of Old Dixie Highway. The adult male pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
His name was not immediately released pending notification of next of kin.
Deputies and railroad officials remained on scene to determine what led to the incident. No other injuries were reported.
Because of the train’s length, several crossings in the area were expected to stay closed until crews could move the train clear of the tracks. Officials urged drivers to plan alternate routes and avoid the area.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation was ongoing.
