Fox Secretly Traveled From England to New York on a Cargo Ship

A red fox unexpectedly traveled thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean after sneaking onto a cargo ship in England and arriving weeks later in New York, according to wildlife officials.

The animal was discovered alive among cargo on a vehicle-transport vessel that reached the Port of New York and New Jersey on Feb. 18. Authorities said the ship had departed from Southampton, England, on Feb. 4. The surprise passenger turned a routine shipping arrival into an unusual wildlife rescue operation.

Officials said no one knows exactly how the fox boarded the ship before it left England. Port personnel found the animal hiding among the transported vehicles after the vessel docked. Wildlife experts were then contacted to ensure the animal received proper care.

The fox was transferred to the Bronx Zoo the following day, where animal specialists began evaluating its condition.

Fox discovered after 3,400-mile voyage

Zoo officials identified the fox as a male estimated to be about 2 years old and weighing roughly 11 pounds. Veterinary staff and animal care teams are currently monitoring the animal at the zoo’s Animal Health Center.

Initial examinations suggest the fox in New York appears healthy despite the long and unexpected journey. Additional medical checks are still underway to confirm its overall condition.

Keith Lovett, director of animal programs at the Bronx Zoo, said the animal seems to be adjusting after the exhausting trip across the ocean. Staff members are continuing to observe its behavior and health as part of the recovery process.

Once all medical evaluations are complete, zoo officials plan to consult with wildlife specialists to determine a suitable long-term placement for the fox.

Red foxes known for adaptability

The unusual discovery also surprised officials in Southampton. A spokesperson for Associated British Ports said the port regularly handles various cargo operations, including vehicle shipments, containers, and cruise liners. However, staff members had never encountered a stowaway fox traveling overseas on a cargo vessel.

The spokesperson added humorously that the animal may have chosen New York over the Solent and joked that traveling aboard the luxury liner Queen Mary 2 — which also sails between Southampton and New York — would have provided a far more comfortable journey.

According to the Bronx Zoo, red foxes are among the most widely distributed carnivorous mammals in the world. The species is recognized by its reddish fur and bushy tail tipped with white.

Researchers note that red foxes thrive in many environments, including forests, grasslands, and urban areas. Their flexible diet — which can include berries, insects, and small mammals — also contributes to their ability to survive in a wide range of habitats.
