Yazmyn Scruggs scored a game-high 19 points, collected six rebounds and had four steals for 10th-seeded Newark Tech in its 51-39 victory against 23rd-seeded Weequahic in the preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament in Newark.
Newark Tech (18-1) led 26-17 at halftime against Weequahic. Weequahic (10-7) cut the lead in the third quarter by outscoring Newark Tech 12-9.
Newark Tech expanded its advantage with a 16-10 fourth quarter to seal its victory.
Kassidy Ahmad scored 12 points, tallied three rebounds, dished out seven assists and had six steals for Newark Tech. Ava Antonie scored 11 points.
Anaya Whitehead led Weequahic with 15 points. Jasmine Agyeman-Budu recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
Newark Tech will face seventh-seeded West Essex in the first round on Saturday.
