Despite trailing after the first and second quarters, Newark Academy pushed back to secure a 42-39 win against Payne Tech in the preliminary round of the Essex County Tournament in Livingston.
Newark Academy knocked down clutch free throws in the game’s final minute to win a tournament game for the seventh straight season.
Eden Avery led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds. Erica Reed added 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists.
Tamia Yaah (12 points), Sanai Fletcher (12 points), and Skylar Wesley (11 points) combined for 35 of Payne Tech’s 39 points.
Newark Academy, the No. 12 seed, advances to play No. 5 seed Glen Ridge in the first round of the Essex County Tournament. The Minutemen are 11-5.
Payne Tech’s record is 2-14.
