The threat actor, believed to be affiliated with the “Embargo Ransomware Group,” an offshoot of the ALPHV Blackcat group, gained access via a password spraying attempt against a VPN server, and was able to abuse account weaknesses to gain escalate access to critical systems. The Cylerian platform’s holistic approach to security enabled the victim enterprise to fully identify and mitigate the threat, preventing further data loss and operational disruption.
The victim enterprise had implemented an industry-leading EDR solution which detected some host-based reconnaissance activities.
