Sharif Mitwally scored a game-high 12 points to lead 13th-seeded Passaic Tech to a 57-34 victory over 20th-seeded Pompton Lakes in the preliminary round of the Passaic County Tourney in Wayne.
Passaic Tech (4-14) took control early, building an 11-3 lead after the first quarter and extending their advantage to 29-13 by halftime. Passaic Tech maintained its momentum throughout the second half, outscoring Pompton Lakes 28-21 to secure the win.
Warren De Guzman and Janni Nunez each contributed 10 points for Passaic Tech. Malichi Noble added six points.
Jensel Sanchez and Matthew LaCroix led Pompton Lakes (3-13) with eight points apiece. John Liguori and Adam Villeno each chipped in four points for Pompton Lakes.
Passaic Tech was particularly effective in the second quarter, where it outscored Pompton Lakes 18-10, and in the fourth quarter with a 17-11 advantage.
Passaic Tech will face 12th-seeded Lakeland in the first round on Saturday. Lakeland took down 21st-seeded Hawthorne Christian 51-44 in its preliminary round matchup.
