Montclair Township’s offices will have a delayed opening of 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 27, following a snowstorm that battered the region Sunday into Monday, the township announced.
Local schools have also scheduled a late start Tuesday.
The National Weather Service recorded just over 9 inches of snow fell in Montclair as of 6:05 p.m. Sunday. Newark saw 12 inches, Cedar Grove 11.5 inches and Nutley 9 inches by that evening, according to the Weather Service.

Free parking at Montclair’s Midtown Deck and all municipal lots will end at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, township officials said. Drivers must move their vehicles by that time. Regular parking fees will apply after 6 a.m.
The town also asked that residents who parked overnight at the lot by the Municipal Building, 205 Claremont Ave., remove their vehicles by 6 a.m. Tuesday to ensure township employees have access to parking.
Trains, Buses
NJ Transit said it has resumed service and is running a reduced schedule. That modified schedule will continue into Tuesday, NJ Transit President and CEO Kris Kolluri said.
“It’s a weekend schedule,” Kolluri said during a press briefing Monday afternoon. “This storm is clearly over. But I remind everybody that the cold weather wreaks havoc on the infrastructure – not just on our infrastructure but the Northeast Corridor infrastructure, which is so critical for our services.”
As of Monday evening, Newark Airport’s flight tracker showed delays after the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey had urged travelers to allow for extra travel time because of the weather.
Frigid Temps
The Weather Service predicts frigid temperatures to last through the week, with a low of 7 degrees on Tuesday and wind chills at 5 degrees below freezing Wednesday.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill warned of roadway icing.
“Just because you see blacktop doesn’t mean that you don’t need to exercise caution during these incredibly cold conditions,” Sherrill said.

The Montclair Public Schools has scheduled a two-hour delayed opening Tuesday, Jan. 27, district spokesperson Lauren Shears Agnew said, following publication of this article. Agnew initially told Montclair Local the district would operate on its regular schedule, but the district subsequently announced otherwise.
“The YMCA morning care program will also operate on a 2-hour delay and will begin at 9:30 a.m. in all elementary schools,” Agnew said in a statement. “This delay will allow transportation staff to confirm safe bus operations and provide employees additional time to travel safely.”
