Elbit Secures Rights to German Laser Comms Tech for Defense Use

Elbit Systems’ German subsidiary has signed an agreement with startup Cucuyo GmbH to obtain exclusive rights to adapt the company’s laser-based communication technology for military applications.

Under the deal, Elbit can use and further develop Cucuyo’s technology specifically for defense purposes, while jointly developing new systems with intellectual property assigned to Elbit.

Focus on Drones, Secure Data Links

As part of the agreement, Elbit’s German unit is establishing a dedicated research and development structure to advance laser communication systems for military platforms.

Initial efforts will focus on integration with drones and ground-based systems.

Laser communications transmit data via light rather than traditional radio frequency (RF) signals, offering advantages such as higher throughput, resistance to electronic interference, and reduced susceptibility to interception.

Expanding European Defense Capabilities

The agreement supports Elbit’s broader strategy to expand its technological footprint in Europe

The company has been increasing its presence in Germany in recent years, including investments in local production and development capabilities.

For Cucuyo, the partnership provides access to Elbit’s expertise in electro-optical systems, communications, and platform integration.

Financial details were not disclosed, but the companies indicated that initial products based on the licensed technology could enter service quickly.
