Tonight, trade between Belize and Mexico remains disrupted as there is still no flow of goods coming across Belize’s northern border.
The cartel has effectively closed the border to cargo movements – as they demand what is being called a tariff to be paid to them.
It’s causing chaos for Belizean importers who have to standby as their perishable items like fruits and vegetables rot on the Mexican side. Meanwhile other importers scrambled this morning to cancel import orders before they leave warehouses in Mexico, because there’s the possibility that the blockade could last until after Easter. Others are hoping that it opens up by Wednesday.
We’ll have to wait and see, but for the time being, the border remains closed and brokers on the Mexican side remain tense and under threat that if they don’t play by the rules, they could turn up dead.
